MOVING SUPPLY LIST
LIST OF MOVING SUPPLIES THAT WILL COME IN HANDY:
Boxes
You’re going to need boxes and you should buy a lot of them. You can get boxes from The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart or we can supply them. If inclement weather is a factor, ensure your boxes have lids to keep your contents clean and dry. Overloading boxes isn’t a good idea because it might cost you more in labor hours if overloaded boxes tear and drop your items and have to be reloaded.
Consider the size of the items you’re boxing and select boxes that will fit good. Again, do not overpack boxes as they’re hard to load and can tear while loading or during transport – this could result in damage to your personal belongings. Purchase moving boxes in varying sizes, small, medium, large and extra large, to avoid this issue. You can always return unused boxes after everything is packed!
Larger boxes hold light to medium weight items, and smaller boxes are needed for fragile or heavy items, or things you’d like separated. Extra large boxes hold bulky but lightweight items like blankets, clothing or pillows. For glassware, use moving boxes with pre-assembled dividers. If you have houseplants, it’s okay to use moving boxes for plants. When packing heavier items, like books, boxes bigger than 12 inches are cumbersome to lift. Some moving boxes are specialized, wardrobe boxes with a hanger bar, or heavy-duty boxes reinforced with stronger walls for moving books or dishes. distribute the weight of heavier items into multiple boxes to ensure the boxes don’t tear.
There is not a method to calculate how many boxes you’ll need since each home is entirely unique. You can guesstimate, but chances are, you’ll have to make a few trips to the store. A general rule of thumb is 70 to 150 boxes for a standard three-bedroom residence.
Packing Tape
Standard packing tape is essential for sealing boxes especially when using long distance moving companies so they remain closed until they reach their final destination. It’s not a bad idea to get a tape dispenser for every family member. For moving heavier boxes, reinforce with duct tape for added support. Keep in mind that cheap tape doesn’t go very far and takes longer to work with. Good packing tape costs a little more but you’ll use less and it won’t break as easy!
Box Cutters Make Unpacking Easier
When you begin to unpack, you’ll be much better off to have a box cutter for cutting clear-cut edges. When using a box cutter, ensure that your blade is sharp and proceed with caution.
Stretch Wrap
Stretch wrap can protect doors and drawers on cabinets and other furniture. Better yet, it sticks to itself, resulting in zero ruminating sticky residue.
Labels Make Unloading a Breeze
Use labels that are unique to your personal preferences, so you can identify each box’s contents. Apply labels to the top and two sides of each box, ensuring the label is readable on at least one side.
Permanent Markers
Every good labeling system is complete with permanent markers. In advance, expect inclement weather on your moving day—better safe than sorry. Writing on boxes with waterproof marker pens protects from rain and smudging.
Packing Paper
Packing paper can be purchased from Lowe’s, Home Depot or your local packing-supply store. Use packing paper to fill boxes and wrap breakable items.
Bubble Wrap
Bubble wrap cushions the bottom of boxes and wraps fragile items. Purchase a large roll or two, you’ll need it. Smaller sheets can be cut from a larger roll. For additional cushioning, foam wrap sheets can be an alternate to bubble wrap.
Basic Tool Kit
A standard tool kit encapsulates a 16-ounce hammer, 12-ounce hammer, four-way screwdriver and basic screwdriver set, utility knife, putty knife, handheld drill, measuring tape, saw, pliers, wrench, hooks, wire, goggles, work gloves and an array of nails and screws. You never know what you might need in the moving process from removing wall hangings to disassembling furniture.
Scissors
While you could open boxes with scissors, we still recommend having a box cutter handy. Use scissors for cutting packing paper, bubble wrap and packing tape. Ensure that your scissors are sharpened to avoid injury.
Large Trash Bags
Large trash bags serve as a catch-all for moving large, lighter items. Larger trash bags are ideal for soft items such as blankets, sheets, pillows and other items. Trash bags are also ideal if you’d like to transport clothing on their hangers. Keep things tidy while you’re packing and unpacking.
Furniture Pads and Moving Blankets
These protect your furniture from scratches during the move.
Furniture Sliders
Buy sliders for the type of flooring you have – wood, tile or carpeting. Providing sliders can help your moving team work more efficiently and cost you less in labor.
Floor Protectors
You’ll want these on moving day so your floors won’t get scratched by furniture and other items.
Mattress Covers
Mattresses will remain clean and protected while transported to their new destination.
Cleaning Supplies
Last but not least, you’ll be relieved that you packed basic cleaning supplies for a clean exit from your old residence to a fresh start in your new home. Place this box in your car, rather than the moving truck, for easy access.
We recommend having paper towels, gloves, window and bathroom cleaners, a mop and bucket, broom and dustpan and portable vacuum on hand as well!
